Whether at home, or in a gym, a treadmill workout is a great way to stay fit and lose
weight. As with most exercise centered on increasing one’s cardiovascular rate, a
treadmill workout is one of the best ways to burn calories. A treadmill workout is a great
way to exercise because the user gets to control his/her own environment. The weather
inside is never too hot or cold, too wet or dry for treadmill exercises. Additionally, one
does not have to worry about how far to walk before heading back for home. There is
also no worry about a confrontation with a neighborhood dog.
When running on a treadmill, the runner normally has three pieces of equipment to assist
in their exercise, and provide safety. First, almost all treadmills are equipped with a
speed control. The speed control will allow the runner to customize his or her treadmill
running based on individual needs. Second, many treadmills include an electronic device
to monitor the runner’s heart rate. Some of these monitors are very sophisticated, and
can calculate the amount of calories burned during the course of treadmill training.
Finally, most treadmills come equipped with handrails. The handrails will allow the
runner to safely grab a hold of something if they begin to lose control of the running pace
set by the treadmill.
There are several techniques that one can use to enhance their treadmill training, some for
improved performance, and some just to break up the monotony of running in place.
Recommended tips for improving performance are: changing speeds, adding jumps to
running, walking, running backwards, and treadmill running with hand weights or
dumbbells. To make the experience of running on a treadmill a little more enjoyable, it is
recommended that the runner listen to a Walkman with headphones, read a book, watch
television, or, in a gym, walk side-by-side, with a partner on another treadmill.
