Company Background Image treadmills operate under the expanding company named Icon Health & Fitness. Icon is the manufacturer of other brands such as Proform, Reebok, and HealthRider. They are not known for their high quality parts or long durability in their machines. In fact, most warranties offered by Icon fitness have a short duration. This short period reflects the quality of the product. Image belongs to the largest fitness retail company. Being the biggest retailer does not mean the best. They have recently put a lot of emphasis on the design of their machines, which would compensate for the “poorer” quality of the machines. However, recent discoveries of overseas cheaper prices drove Image to better and stronger motors, thus its newer models are likely to have better warranties for motors, but still 90 days for the rest. Image treadmills are the lesser known machines of Icon Health and Fitness brands. However, its models seem to deliver a better value for money than its counterparts. Strong Point The first strong point of Image treadmills, as mentioned above, are the increase performance in their motors. Icon Fitness decided to go overseas in purchasing its motor; which results in better motors at a lower price. Image treadmill’s newer models will tend to have a longer motor warranty. Another good point is its design. With many engineers constantly looking to improve the Image treadmill, the design seems to be one of its top qualities. The biggest strong point may be its value for money. Image treadmills are affordable and they offer great features for the price you pay. Weak Point Other than its motor warranty, the rest of it is quite weak. The advanced models have 1 year on parts and labor, but the remaining models only have 90 days. Although Image is known to have good customer service, once your warranty has expired their customer service declines. The great design is countered with a poor quality Image treadmill that is not resilient or durable. Expert Reviews TreadmillDoctor.com says "you typically get more for your money with an Image but you also tend to get the same type of problems you have with other Icon built machines, like blown lower boards and more frequent parts replacement." ConsumerSearch.com says "Image 16 Q treadmill is fine for a home treadmill if your fitness plans only include walking." Epinions.com rates Image treadmills 3 stars out of 5. Conclusion Most treadmills under $1,000 can lead to future breakdowns and frequent repairs. For this reason, we suggest the Image treadmill Advance models for their better quality and features. If your budget is under $1,000, the 19R would be your best choice. Opt for the extended warranty. Image’s recent push to increase the quality of their treadmill is reflected on the longer duration of their warranty. The Image 15 R is the most basic Image treadmill. You have limited walking/running space with its 17 x 50 inch belt. With 4 built in programs and features such as CoolAire fan and Precision Response Impact absorption, you are getting an excellent value for money. As mentioned, Image has improved the quality on its motor and therefore it has a longer duration. However, 90 days for the rest is not convincing. We recommend you spend the additional $200 for the Image 19 R if you are thinking of buying the lower end models within Image. - *BEST VALUE WITHIN IMAGE* The Image 19 R is a good choice for a treadmill in the $500 range. Not many will offer wireless chest strap heart rate monitor. And let us remind you the importance of a wireless strap for treadmills. Using grip pulse sensors is not practical since it requires you to run while holding onto the handle. It disrupts your rhythm, your biomechanics, and can lower your safety. The 19 R has a respectable belt size, decent motor, and features that you expect to see in high priced treadmills. 10 year motor warranty is really good. 90 days for the rest is very weak. Customers have reported that customer service is dreadful once the warranty is over. Price - $599 Length - 73 in Width - 36 in Height - 54 in Weight - 198 lbs User Weight Capacity - 300 lbs Belt - 19 x 55 in Motor - 2.8 Total HP Motor Speed - 0 to 10 mph Incline - 1.5 to 10 % Folding - Yes Heart Rate - Yes, EKG™ Heart Rate Monitor Heart Rate Control - No Wireless Chest Strap - No Programs - 6 Built in programs Features - LED racetrack view, QuickSpeed™ Control, Power Incline™ Control, Precision Response™ Cushioning, CoolAire™ Fan, MyTracks™ Step Counter, RaceTrack™ Progress Monitor Display - Total distance, time, incline, pulse, calories, speed, pace Home Warranty - 10 years on motor, 90 for the rest [Back to Top] __________________________________________________ Image 16.0 Q Treadmill - *RECOMMENDED WITHIN $0 - $499* The 16.0Q Image treadmill along with other cheaper treadmills only has a ninety-day warranty - the shortest in the industry. Even so, reviews say the Image treadmill is fine for a home treadmill if your fitness plans only include walking. This treadmill has a wider belt (19 inches) and a stronger motor (2.5 horsepower) than some other budget models, and it comes with a hand-grip heart-rate sensor. Even so, regular walkers and runners will need a more durable treadmill, like one of those above. Price - $499 Length - 72.75 in Width - 33.25 in Height - 61.75 in Weight - User Weight Capacity - 250 lbs Belt - 19 x 54 in Motor - 2.5 Total HP Motor Speed - 0 to 10 mph Incline - 1.5 to 10 % Folding - Yes Heart Rate - Yes, Grip Pulse Sensors Heart Rate Control - No Wireless Chest Strap - No Programs - 5 Built in programs Features - Precision Response™ Console, Space Saver™ Design, five LED windows and a 7 x 10 matrix display Display - Total distance, time, incline, pulse, calories, speed, pace Home Warranty - 90 day [Back to Top] __________________________________________________ Image 17.0 R Treadmill - DISCONTINUED The Image 17 R is the compromise between the 15 R and 19 R. It has the same amount of built in programs (6) and motor power as the 19 R. But has the same warranty as the 15 R. As we’ve been writing in most of our pages, warranty reflects the quality of the machine. The one advantage that Image treadmill has is its folding capabilities. It’s a great space saver and practical if you opt to locate it in the family room. The 17 R is a good treadmill for under $500. But remember that any machine at this price has a poor reliability, and low quality parts. If what we are telling you is not deterring you from choosing a low end Image treadmill, then the 19 R would be your best choice. The belt size for this model is larger than other models in the same price range. The warranty on motor is also slightly better than par.
