Epic Treadmill - A Reasonable Low End Treadmill

Icon Fitness offers two Epic treadmill models. Both are in the range of $1,000. These models will be reviewed individually. But before we go on to the review, let’s begin with the …

Company Background

The Epic treadmill is a brand manufactured by Icon Health and Fitness. Icon basically brought the Epic brand back to life for a few retail chains, the most recognized being Costco.

In fact, Icon Health and Fitness uses Epic brand name on exclusive models of treadmills and markets products like Epic T60 treadmills specifically for large retailers like Costco.

Here is a statement by Costco.com issuing a letter to its Epic treadmill buyers:

“ICON Health & Fitness, Inc., of Logan, Utah ("ICON") has issued a product recall notice for the Epic T60 Treadmill. During initial assembly the gas spring/shock can be damaged if the walking platform is folded up and goes beyond the vertical position. This action can cause the shock to contact the treadmill roller and be damaged and could propel parts out. The parts of the shock could hit a bystander causing injury. ICON has received one report of a minor ankle laceration, one report of a punctured foot and five reports of minor property damage.”

Fortunately this problem was taken cared of.

Strong Point

The motor warranty period of this Epic treadmill is good relative to its price. The motor carries a 12 year warranty. Most treadmills in the $1,000 range offer strong motor warranties.

The specs are quite good for a $1,000 treadmill. However, the value isn’t as high since their parts are lower quality.

Weak Point

The Epic treadmill is a popular machine and is priced right. However, since the pricing is under $1,000, it won't have quite the ruggedness or solid built construction like some other treadmills on the market, most notably the Smooth treadmill.

A couple of concern for the Epic T60 treadmill could be the keypad which seems to give some Icon models trouble. The deck coating in this Epic treadmill model is considered to be thin. Epic T60 treadmill uses the cheaper rollers. Users buying an Epic T60 treadmill should get an extended warranty

Expert Reviews

Treadmilldoctor.com says: “For the price, this one is hard to beat but it has some shortcomings that aren’t visible to the average consumer.”

Consumersearch.com rated the Epic T60 is a budget buy. However, you should note that there has been a assembly flaw in 2004 and early 2005.

Conclusion

The Epic treadmill has a good value for its price, we would recommend this brand only if your budget doesn’t exceed $1,000. It is one of the better low end treadmill out there.

Epic 400 MX Treadmill

Epic treadmill - 4000MX

The Epic 400 MX is the base model offered by this brand. Unfortunately, it does not have much to offer. Like most ICON Fitness brands, Epic treadmills are low quality and non-resilient treadmills.

You can expect the 400MX Epic treadmill to include ComfortStep™ Impact Absorption System, CoolAire™ workout fan and iFit compatibility for a more enjoyable workout. The absorption system will lower impact on your joints, CoolAire fans can cool you down while running hard and iFit allows you to connect audio peripherals.

The main weakness in the 400MX treadmill is its warranty. 90 for parts and labor is simply too short. Its main strength is its motor (2.25 CHP). However for an extra $100, you can get a 3.0 CHP motor and a longer warranty in the Epic T60.
